Symptoms and Treatments of TMJ

TMJ disorders impact the temporomandibular joint, which is the joint that connects the jaw to the skull. There are multiple causes for the disorder, but understanding the pain and the triggers that can make it worse are crucial to managing this problem that impacts millions of people.

This month we make a special effort to be sure our patients are aware of TMJ because November is TMJ Awareness Month. The holiday season can be a particularly difficult time for people who suffer from TMJ because stress can exacerbate pain that is otherwise under control and many people will find themselves at holiday gatherings attempting to eat harder to chew foods they know they should avoid. With one out of eight people experiencing some level of TMJ pain, we believe it is important to get the word out regarding symptoms of this disorder as well as treatments that are available to our patients.

Symptoms of TMJ:

  • Jaw locking, pain or popping

  • Difficulty chewing

  • Jaw stiffness

  • Headaches that tend to be severe

  • Ear pain or ringing in the ears

  • Upper back, neck and shoulder pain

More extreme symptoms can include dizziness or swelling at the jaw or along the sides of the face.

Causes of TMJ:

  • Genetics

  • Head, neck or jaw misalignment

  • Grinding teeth

  • Stress

  • Trauma

  • Diseases, such as arthritis

We strongly recommend coming to our office for an evaluation if you believe you may be suffering from TMJ or your TMJ suddenly becomes worse. Our treatments may include physical therapy, medication. Botox or, in some cases surgery. Call today for your appointment and get relief from TMJ pain.
