Thomas & Associates : Oral Cancer Screening
The National Cancer Institute estimates that about 40,000 people in the United States will be diagnosed with mouth or throat cancer in 2012.
About 8,000 people will die of the disease.
Dr. Thomas & Associates looks for oral cancer before you have any symptoms. This can help find oral cancer at an early stage. When abnormal tissue or cancer is found early, it may be easier to treat.
Screening for oral cancer is done during a routine check-up by your dentist.
What should I expect during my oral cancer screening?
An oral cancer screening exam includes looking for lesions, including areas of Leukoplakia (an abnormal white patch of cells) and Erythroplakia (an abnormal red patch of cells). This lesions on the membrane may become cancerous.
If lesions are found in the mouth, your dentist can then recommend a procedure that can be used to find abnormal tissue that might develop into oral cancer.
