A child's primary teeth, also called "baby teeth," are just as important as their permanent teeth will be later in life. Children also have particular needs when it comes to sitting in the dentist's chair. At Thomas & Associates you can be assured that we'll provide gentle, comfortable care for each of your children.
A child's first teeth begin to erupt usually around 6 months. Obviously, teeth enable the child to chew, but they also help with speaking and hold a place in the jaw for permanent teeth down the road. Most kids will have a full compliment of primary teeth by age three. They begin to shed those in favor of permanent ones around age six. The first of their 32 permanent teeth also begin to appear around then.
It's important to supervise your child brushing and instill good habits. The American Dental Association recommends a first visit to the dentist as soon as their first tooth erupts and no later than their first birthday.
Also, you may consider sealants when your children's first molars appear. Sealants create a thin barrier that protect the teeth from decay-causing bacteria.
